Hi, I have just been donated a vintage treadle Jones' sewing machine and I am trudging through the web trying to find a page to date my machine. Serial number is 57859 any help would be great!

  1. Does any one know what size sewing needles I need for a Jones Rushby hand crank sewing machine 1920; serial# 268238 is the number on the machine? It came with 3 needles and no size on them or owner's manual.
  2. Jones originally in or around 1880 started with a simply numeric list of serial numbers for all their machines. Whilst they continued this one numeric list it is possible to approximately date a machine. Jones in their wisdom started several different numeric and alpha-numeric serial number runs after 1935.
The Jones C.S. was introduced in 1893 and apart from some cosmetic improvements remained unchanged until well into the 1930's. The Jones Company extensively badged this machine for various retailers and so it appears with a variety of names on the arm. The easiest way to confirm if your badged machine is a Jones C.S. is to look for the large screw head on top of the arm between the two spool pins.

Jones Family C.S. Serial No. 21572
A later Jones Family C.S. probably made around 1895.
It has the later style decals to the arm and bed although roses are still used as the centre decal. The case fastenings have changed but it still lacks the accessory compartment found on later models.
This machine was in grim condition when we found it, see the
Restoration Page.

Jones Family C.S. Serial No. 234882
This has 'As supplied to Her Majesty Queen Alexandra' on the shoulder decal and so was probably manufactured around 1914. There is extensive pitting to the bed, but the decals are reasonable and it is mechanically sound.

C.W.S. Federation Serial No.341636
Jones produced machines with badging for various retailers in this case for the Co-operative Wholesale Society. Dating to around 1925 it has beautiful floral decals and a scrolled C.W.S. Federation badge to the bed.

Jones Family C.S. Serial No. 420743.
Dated to about 1929 with Black diagonal across the shoulder decal and across the centre base decal. The machine and decals are in very good condition.

Whiteleys Universal Serial No. 514594.
Probably made around 1934. A very plain machine with no decals apart from 'Whiteleys Universal' on the arm and 'British Made' on the bed. Whiteleys was a Department Store in London.
We bought this machine without a base but it sits nicely in a base from a Jones machine. The metal work is still bright and mechanically it hardly makes a sound!

Empress. Serial No. 486238.
Made around 1933. Very similar to the Whiteley's Universal down to the 'British Made' across the bed. The machine is in good condition and sits in a short base with the hand crank assembly overhanging the end. This machine is missing its cover which would have been made of fabric, shaped, with a pocket for accessories/manual. It simply sat on top of the machine tea-cosy style!

Federation Serial No. 522569.
Dates to the mid 1930's and from the decals this appears to be a Federation machine produced by Jones. Machines with similar decals have badging for the Co-operative Wholesale Society with Federation across the arm.

A close up of the Federation decal on the shoulder. The colours are brilliant green and turquoise blue, a combination we have also seen not only on Jones machines and those badged for the Co-op but also machines of Jones origin which have been badged as Bradbury's.

  1. Jun 19, 2012 Search. Today's Posts. I have been looking for information about a Jones sewing machine but have not been able to find out anything. I have tried searching on the web but have not had any joy. I have tried to find a list of serial numbers (like.
  2. The Magic Sewing Machine by Alex Askaroff No1 New Release on Amazon. A tale for all ages. After 1900 all Singers had a letter prefix before the serial number. (The letter suffix after the model number denotes where the machine was manufactured). For example, Singer model 99k serial number Y6307577.The 99k denotes model 99 made in (K) for Kilbowie and the serial number.

Jun 19, 2012 I think that it used to be a hand crank machine because there is a receipt - faded through the years - which detail a work order for the motor to be fitted that is dated 1984. I am presuming that the machine is older the that possibly? I have tried to find a list of serial numbers (like on the Singer sites) but so far have drawn a blank.

Jones Sewing Machines The Jones Sewing Machine Co. Started life in the town of Audenshaw, just east of Manchester and now next to the M60. In 1859, William and his brother John of Shepley Street, Audenshaw set up a business producing domestic sewing machines. At the time William owned an engineering firm producing very small steam engines. Not long after they started they formed a partnership with Thomas Chadwick, trading as Chadwick and Jones. This didn’t last long, as in 1864 Thomas Chadwick went to work for Bradbury and Co., a rival sewing machine manufacturer. Just 10 years later, in 1869, William Jones opened purportedly the largest factory in England at Guide Bridge, a few miles east of Audenshaw and the firm was registered as a limited company in 1879.

The Jones factory produced a wide variety of machines for both domestic and industrial use, most noticably heavy industrial machines for Burton’s the tailors. Most of the machines produced had equivalent Singer models but with various differences. The ‘Jones Family’ and ‘Jones Medium Transverse Shuttle’ were very similar models to the Singer 12 and 13. A Jones hand crank model called the ‘Cat-Back’ (now more commonly called the ‘Serpentine’) was made in large numbers and remained in production for almost 20 years. Jones Serpentine The early Serpentine models did not have a take up lever and the tension discs were mounted on the arm of the machine instead of the faceplate. By around 1883 the faceplate was brass plated with the tension discs mount on it and the decals over the top arm of the machine were ornate vine leaves.

By the end of the 1880’s the faceplate was nickel plated and in the centre of the machine bed a decal proclaimed ‘Jones Hand Machine’. A couple of years later this decal was replaced with a brass boss showing a gryphon and the words ‘Jones Hand Machine’. Stamped into the round cloth plate are two stamps The first with the words ‘As supplied to H.R.H. Princess of Wales’ and ‘Jones Hand Machine’ and the second with ‘Jones Sewing Machine Compy Ltd’ and ‘Jones & Compy Guide Bridge, Nr Manchester’ with a trade mark bird with outstretched wings. The Jones Serpentine was also badged for sale under the names of different retailers and special limited edition versions were produced until 1907. For a Jones Serpentine Parts List, please. Jones Family D53A The Jones Medium Spool was a rotary hook machine that was patented in 1889 and was a copy of the Wheeler and Wilson No.9, the production of which was later taken over by Singer.

A few years later the Jones Cylindrical Shuttle was introduced. The Jones Company badged this model with different retailers names. A point of interest a badged Jones machine has a large screw head on the top of the arm between the spool pins. Both the Jones Medium Spool and Cylindrical Shuttle machines remained in production until the 1930’s. These models were often badged with different names for larger retailers. Badged Martlet (Photo courtesy of Anthony Kershaw) In 1957 the Jones Company was sold to the Imperial And Continental Gas Association.

ICGA already owned E. Which made sewing machines under the Vickers and BSM names.

It appears that E. Harris may well have become involved with the distribution of the Jones machines at this time. By 1962 ICGA had sold its sewing machine business at a minimum book value to the Brother International Group of Japan. They are still today producing sewing machines at the old Jones factory under the Brother name.
